Stop it

10/14/2011

Seriously

Remember a long time ago when I announced that I no longer like referring to myself as a “christian”?

You don’t?

Well, let me just throw out another reason why.

I don’t like being a member of a club who’s members feel it’s their responsibility for keeping my morality in check without even knowing me.

Not all christians are this way.  And, trust me, I’ve invited some of my christian friends into a relationship where accountability is very normal.

But, people out there who like to judge me for implying a cuss word in one of my videos, please stop.  Not for my sake. (I don’t really care how you feel about it) Stop for the sake of our reputation as people who follow Jesus.  It’s embarrassing.

You don’t know me.  You don’t know my theological position on use of the english language.  It’s probably different than yours.

I know… yours is right.

Seriously though, channel that energy into a real relationship with someone – someone you know.  Someone who has invited you into that kind of accountability.

Better yet, channel that energy into something that matters.  Get mad at “christians” who don’t feed the poor, take care of widows, or love their enemies.

And, if you’re offended by my videos… don’t watch them.

Sorry if I sound angry.  I’m really not.

I realize I too do things that are embarrassing to Jesus.  I hope and pray the people in my life who have earned the right to call me out are courageous enough to do so.

Love it! Witnessed your antics at Catalyst last week! Couldn’t get enough! Thanks for the laughs, brother! Pooey on those who have nothing better to do, but show the opposite of love whenever they see an opportunity. I don’t know you, but appreciate your sense of humor! I actually felt inspired by you! Thanks again!! Have a beautiful day. Enjoy a smoothie.

“earned the right to call me out”

That’s the crux of it right there.  We have to establish and maintain a relationship that allows us to be involved in someone’s life to the point that the person involved knows we’re doing it because we give a crap and not because we think we’re high and mighty.

  • http://www.gatebeautiful.ca bekka

I feel the need to say something like “Word” or maybe “A. to the men.”, even though I’ve never used those phrases before in my life. So, um… Good job, fantastic.

  • http://mamapsalmist.com/ mamapsalmist

It’s so much more than just cussing.  I’ve had my faith questioned (or outright denied) because I considered the candidates before voting.  I did something other than blindly obey the far, far right Republican party and was told there was no way I could be a Christian if I did that.

Where’s the verse to back THAT up?

Because, clearly, the only way I can follow Jesus is to do exactly as I’m told without question or consideration.  Yeah, that sounds just like Him.

Word. And no, I don’t know you…but I went to your church & you’ve corrupted my kids with your videos, which are hilarious. I’ve been defending your good name yesterday, today, heck, for years now from charges of unpiety and inproprietry. (Wait, are those words?)At any rate, pack me a suitcase full of small unmarked bills and hold it for me until I’m back in Alpharetta. No? OK, then buy me a Starbucks. Or follow me on Twitter. Oh, nevermind.
But to what you just said, Heck yeah. Excuse my unholy use of the substitute word for h-e-double-toothpicks.

I greatly appreciate your encouraging words!

Don’t even get me started on politics. (but really, do it)

  • JWash

who cares what people think. Just keep following Jesus not people like you are doing. If they can handle a substitue word or whatever they need quit leaving in a Christian dream world. Your hilarious bro! Keep up the good work and give it up for Jesus

I’m going to have to do like 34 humorous posts before I can go that deep

And while we’re at it, where’s the verse that says politics are where Christians should focus their energy. We are supposed to be making disciples, not making Republicans (or Democrats). Only Jesus can solve the real problems in this worls – and He id not come as a political Messiah, he came to save us from our sins. I’m not advocating an apolitical stance – just that every Christian should spend more time sharing the gospel and building up new Christians than campaigning for laws or politicians.

Yes and I agree! And, your videos are hilarious – especially the implied cuss words!

    Tripp,

Great post. Just started following a lot of your work and it’s inspiring to be funny within the church. I will however correct your English grammar when you said, “And if your angry,” should say “and if you’re angry.”. Haha. Love ya dude! Be strong my friend.

  • http://twitter.com/abhutchison Amy Hutchison

A friend of mine who leads a ministry for young adults was handing out flyers advertising it in a bar.  People got offended he (a pastor) was in the bar in the first place.  The frustrating thing is, for those of us who are trying to be accessible to Christians and non-Christians alike, we can never win.  If you’re too Christian, non-Christians won’t listen.  If you aren’t Christian enough, Christians will be the first to criticize.

PS-If it’s the video I’m thinking it is, I hesitated to post it this week in case someone got offended by the “implied cussing” and then realized Andy obviously must have approved, so I didn’t really care who else didn’t.  Sometimes it’s about deciding who you really care not to offend, anyway.
PPS-Are we really to believe you only receive a “little hate mail”?  ;-)

  • http://www.andreabrown.ca Andrea Brown

I always appreciate that your videos (like your blog) are real – they show Christianity in a day-to-day, gritty kind of way… and they’re a ton of fun too. So thanks for doing what you do – and in doing so, encouraging the rest of us not to inhibit our own creativity.

  • Rich Stephens

At the risk of soundIng too “Christian”…

    Amen, preach it brother!

Wow, trip.  What do you think about politics?  5,4,3,2,1…GO!!

  • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

Your videos are great, but that cussing, naked old lady in “Organ Hero” was just too much.

    Kidding.

You crack me up. I could watch “Listen, Listen” everyday. And the Donald Miller thing was genius! “Astronauts drink Tang.”

Keep up the good work–you merry heart doeth the body a lot of good.

I can’t believe you are getting flak for that… I actually laughed out loud at it…. hilarious.

I wish I had hate mail.

“I wish I had hate mail.” LOL

  • http://missionallendale.wordpress.com/ Joey Espinosa

Wow. I didn’t even catch the implied cuss word. Probably shows that I’ve become assimilated into the culture, and I need to be purged.

I need to go back and watch it again. BRB.

When people start to understand that we are planted in this earth with different missions in life, we will stop judging each other. I personally think you are doing a wonderful job and that you have been equipped to do what you do. People just get jealous and channel it by hating, judging. Keep it up. Don’t stop, you have a mission, and you have to fulfill it. We love you and pray for you!

Just my luck. As soon as I add this blog to my Google reader the geyser of filth goes off like a gushing firehose.
    HaHa!
I remember the word in question and it actually made me laugh. it was well placed.
    Ignore the haters.

Very well said.  We have to earn the right to even attempt to correct anyone.  And we better be dead on, or we do more harm than good.
It’s so petty.  And that type of behavior earns the bad reputation “Christians” have.

I really find this particular blog sooo encouraging!!! I get really frustrated when fellow brothers and sisters judge each other and tear each other down over non-essentials. It sucks even more when they do it in the name of ‘being a good Christian’. I actually need to stop my own post at that lest I start to do the very thing I’m complaining about others doing. Thanks Tripp for being real. Nuff said.

  • Ricky Anderson

God looks at the heart, people don’t. That’s why we’re told not to judge. That’s His job.

    Ignore the haters, Tripp.

  • http://www.warriorshepherd.com/blog Dave Hearn

I know… but at least you’re out there in “the arena” — you are doing things that make people think about their faith… not question their faith, but make them think.  Keep doing it!

  • Owen Gifford

    word up.

  • http://www.realmamareallife.com/ Real Mama

Tripp – I couldn’t agree more with you.  I am so tired of people butting into my life that barely know me and make judgement calls on whether or not I am doing the will of God.  Even more than this…friends that I thought knew me well have done this to me lately…and I hear from others that they think I am not hearing God right just because I didn’t make a decision about my life that they would have made.  I am dying to write a post here soon titled “What the world doesn’t need is 1 more judgmental Christian”  over at http://www.realmamareallife.com.  Hope you continue to throw of the shackles that the “Christian” world would have you in that doesn’t allow for the Holy Spirit to take you where you are supposed to go and reach only the people you can reach in only the way you can reach them.  Keep up the God work you do!

P.S.  Our leaders played your Godz Bodz this weekend at our retreat…I was rolling in my seat and have to admit I might never be able to worship the same again.  It was hilarious!

I said “hell” in a prayer to God today… I wasn’t referring to where Satan resides … and He still loves me (a lot) … He still loves you a lot too.

Hey Tripp…I did finally write that post on judging/christians/etc.  It is under “what the world needs now…”

I am so with you on this, Tripp.

Judging others, being prejudiced, staying away from “heathens” for fear of being tarnished, being arrogant, self-righteous, and holier than thou… is that who Jesus was? Nope, He wasn’t.

He loved people, even those who were not like him. He forgave sinners. He healed the sick instead of shrugging them off. He reached out and dined with heathens. In fact, they would turn out to be his dearest friends. It was the religious people who loathed Him. Hmm, I wonder why?

Here’s my “religion” = Love God. Love others. Jesus summed it up with that, so why would we need more?

    Smiles and High Fives,

    Ro

Thank you. To me it sounds like you just hate hypocrisy as much as I do. I have some friends that keep me in line with what I do in my walk in faith. But I couldnt imagine being judged by people who don’t know, judging me on things I find funny. Also I hope you too find some good Christian buds like I got too. Love your stuff my man

  • http://free2b2much.blogspot.com/ Beckie

I said it once and I’ll say it again…
nothing puts you in a box faster then well meaning “christianity”.

I am a full on Christ lover. I just try to keep the christian label under wraps until you know me better. :-)
