Stolen Icons

08/17/2009

Seriously

What immediately comes to mind when you see this?

If your answer isn’t “Ghostbusters” then you’re either younger than 20, older than 50, or a smoker.

How about this?

Jesus?  or soccer mom?

Or this?

I know we are on the same page now.

There are thousands of logos / icons that will forever be associated with certain brands, but that’s not what I’m getting at here.   What amazes me is how easily they can be stolen.

The “no circle” has been around a lot longer than Slimer.  The Ichthus has been around a lot longer than the Honda Odyssey.  And there’s a good chance most people don’t even know the original meaning of the rainbow.

How in the world does a symbol of God’s promise to never again judge the world with water become a sign for a very judged group of people often referred to as “flamers”.

Dear gay community,

I love you.  Thank you for my last haircut.  I hope and pray you find more grace and less judgment from those that of us that claim to follow Jesus.  But, can we please have our icon back?

I have often thought the same thing. Great post, and yes, I associate the first icon with Ghostbusters.

I was a deprived child who never saw Ghostbusters (my husband still thinks that's impossible), but amen to the post.

As I read your post to my wife you almost made lettuce shoot out her nose.

Thank you for that … crazily, the highlight of my day.

I just can't bring myself to stick a Jesus fish to my Honda Odyssey because I'm a very insensitve driver. (I didn't mind putting an LC logo sticker from my church though. Hmmm.)

Maybe we can work out a complicated, multiple-party trade deal?

    Here's what I propose:

    1) The Gays will return your rainbow icon, in exchange for:

    - Holidays, which the Christians will return to the Pagans, who created them, and:

    - Hymns, the melodies of which the Christians will return to the Hedonists, who developed them to celebrate how blasted they were

    2) In exchange for a strict "hands off" policy on Jefferson and Franklin, the Freethinkers will give the Religious Right an option on Adams during election years (as well as two first-round draft picks, to be featured on the cover of Sports Spectrum)

    3) The Christians will relinquish their right to Bob Dylan and the lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate, if only the Secularists will take back R. Kelly and Jane Fonda (Pleeeeeeeease?)

    4) The Athiests, Agnostics, and Existentialists will cease their riffing on the ICHTHUS fish bumper ornament if the Christians will apologize for Five Iron Frenzy, GodTube, BibleMan, TestaMints, T-shirts with bad puns, and pretty much everything in Christian bookstores.

    5) The Academics will stop trying to push Christians out of their rightful place in the history of the civil rights movement, in exchange for the Christians giving a damn about the civil rights of their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters in the future.

    See? Everybody's happy!
