A Magnificent Denomination

Mormans have the bible, and then the other book by the other guy, Joseph Smith.  He’s apparently the prophet that Jesus visited in America.

I belong to a similar religion.  We have the Bible, and then Achtung Baby.  Bono is our late prophet (first spotted in Ireland), and he’s still here with us.

The religion is called Christianity.

I have a feeling a lot of my blog readers are Jesus people, and I’d bet everything in my pocket that those same readers sang louder in their living room last night watching YouTube than they did a few hours earlier at church.

I promise I’m not trying to stir up anything here.  I’m just making an observation:
People who love Jesus also love U2, and I think any group of people that can fill stadiums full of  hand raising God-lyric singing people  should be able to start a denomination.  Or at least a worship leading seminar.

I'm late to this post, so I doubt if anyone will be concerned with what I think, but the fact is that this is just one more example of how Christians want so badly to idolize someone who is famous. We can't help it! It is so, so sad. I do it too…I'm not judging anyone more than myself. But the fact is, anytime someone says something about God, we think, "Oooh! He might be a Christian!" And then we buy everything by that person. Evanessence anyone?

I can't say I love Jesus. The Jesus that I've read about seems amazing but I think the Bible is not the word of god. I can't say I'm an atheist though. I think the historical Jesus is much more interesting than the embellished person of the New Testament. I think the Bible is a work of man, not god. Its derived from deuteronomy which everyone knows is a political document as much as anything. I really like Bono and what he stands for. And he believes Jesus is not the only way. I can't see how so many people still believe in the Bible exclusively or literally with the wealth of understanding we've gained about the world and universe over the last 100 years or so… It is great metaphor though in my opinion.

Why is it that the people who come to my door to sell me religion never talked about the really amazing things Jesus said (like judge not lest ye be judged) or the profound things he stood for and the great deeper understanding of morality this person had. They just want to spew cliches and get you to join up.

I think God is for everyone and so I can't accept any religion that makes another invalid. I don't see the need to "believe" period. Never made much sense to me.

I think Bono does not refer to himself as a christian. Here are some of his quotes:
“God’s Spirit moves through us and the world at a pace that can never be constricted by any one religious paradigm. Be wary of people who think theirs is the only way. Unilateralism before God is dangerous. Unless tolerance comes with fervor, you’ll see it (war) in the U.S.”

    “Jesus, Jew, Mohammed—All True!”

I like this. makes much more sense to my heart…

I am Christian and I like me some U2, but not enough to buy one of their concert tickets. And more specifically I'm "Morman". It's actually spelled Mormon, but I do enjoy the implication made with your spelling. Rock on….continue to rock.

I find my collard shirt looks best with my ham bone pants.
Bono is great but I only like a few U2 songs.

  5. Brett says:

Heck if it weren't for U2 we'd have no current modern worship music. Have Delay – Will Play. BTW, I had some collard greens last week for dinner: Point ("shirt" and golf combo).

  6. Blake, did you wear collard shirts when it was Christmas time, in Hollis, Queens?

It's kinda fun (and odd) to find a community of fellow Christian, not-U2-lovers at the bottom of this post. I wrote about my perspective on this a while back – http://blog.davidvosburg.com/2009/04/i-wnt-2-ht-u... – they are just alright with me. Jesus is more than.

Yeah I gotta say U2 is one of those bands that kind of fit the formula of the broken clock being right twice a day. They have 100s of songs and I probably like 5-10 at the most. I really appreciate what Bono does to raise awareness of severe poverty and wish other artist did this. However, without a doubt U2 is the most overrated band of all time!

  9. I'm with you, Tom. A couple of good songs, but I'd never shell out $50 (it's probably more) to go see them.

  10. Blake says:

I love Jesus, and I think U2 is great, for what they've done and continue to do, but I'm not particularly a fan. There is definitely a connection to Jesus lovers and Bono. There's also a connection between people who love Jesus and Golf or Jesus and collard shirts or Jesus and croakies or Jesus and Tractors or Jesus and Football. Lets make denominations for those as well! I call Jesus and Twitter!

  11. Tom says:

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I'm a Christian and I love me some rock and roll. But I don't love U2.

I like some of their stuff, but that's about it.
